Read about our Sports and A Level PE students' trips to Crossfit Stone Towers and Canterbury Christ Church University.

As the College geared up for the winter, the Sports department have found themselves busy with trips to sports and fitness facilities around Canterbury.

These trips aimed to provide unique learning experiences, and encourage students to think about their next steps after College and beyond into successful careers.

Our Sports, Fitness and Personal Training students headed over to Crossfit Stone Towers to complete a circuit challenge. The fitness centre is situated a 20-minute walk from campus giving the students a great warm up and cool down before and after their session.

During the challenge, the students had four exercises to complete, working in sets against the clock. The learners started on the stationary bikes before proceeding to weighted step-overs. The next task was overhead squats before jumping into pull-ups. It was clear, their competitive side helped to keep them motivated as students pushed through the final sets.

This experience not only helped to increase resilience, camaraderie and stamina needed as a fitness coach or personal trainer, but it also gave students a chance to experience being in the position of the trainee. This will help them to think of the kind of motivation and encouragement needed from them as a trainer when working with clients.

Our A Level PE students visited Canterbury Christ Church University’s Sports Science Labs. Whilst there, the students worked with Sports Scientists, taking part in activities to understand how the human body responds to physical activity and how to optimise their performance.

This helped the learners gain insight into how they can become better athletes, and understand more about the anatomy of the human body.

The tests included VO2 Max test, in which learners test their cardiovascular fitness through running on a treadmill and measuring their oxygen intake; Lung function tests using a Vitalograph, this measures the respiratory health blowing into a tube; and the reaction wall, which measures the reaction time of participants through hitting a coloured light as fast as possible.

Experiences like these set our learners up to succeed. Giving them a taste of certain careers within the Sport and Fitness industry and the dedication needed from them to excel within the competitive, exciting world of Sport and Fitness.
